Welcome to the European Solar Engineering School!

The European Solar Engineering School (ESES) provides a unique education in solar engineering at Högskolan Dalarna. The one year Masters program is based on research work at the Solar Energy Research Center (SERC). The program provides proficiency in all main solar engineering subjects and allows the students after graduating to work as experts in the solar industry and in academic reserach. This webpage is made by actual and former ESES students and provides information about the program, the life in Borlänge and serves as a meeting point for current, former and prospective students.

Many applicants for the ESES Programme

More and more students are applying for our Master's programme in solar Engineerign. In total about 230 applications have been submitted for ESES. 135 students applied at the first round for Non-European students in the beginning of the year. 31 of them have been offered a place in the programme. The second round was used by 95 (mainly European) students. The evaluation of these applications is still ongoing. In addition an number of Erasmus exchange students are expected to study course within the programme.
According to the programme coordinator Eva Lindberg an increasing number of students from the US are among the applicants. It seems Barack Obama's new energy policy is encouraging more young people to look into solar engineering!

Simulation Course in Autumn 2009

E-mail Print PDF
This autumn Högskolan Dalarna/SERC we will be running the course on dynamic simulation and cultural context of energy systems (6 ECTS credits) that was developed within the SolNET EU doctoral school.(http://www.uni-kassel.de/fb15/ite/solar/solnet/ ). The course is a regular Swedish university course at Högskolan Dalarna and thus the tuition is free. The course has a one week intensive period in Borlänge, Sweden from 31/8 – 4/9 (week 36), while the majority of the work is in the form of home assignments.
The course has been run in slightly different forms and has developed with the years, with significant additions for the SolNET program. The majority of the participants have been PhD students, but also masters students and professionals from industry have joined. It has proven to be a very good networking opportunity for the students.
The course consists of three parts:
  1. Intensive week with lectures and exercises on simulation techniques and planning. All hands-on exercises are with TRNSYS while the lectures are on modelling, simulation, and (simulation) project planning as well as on TRNSYS. There is a home assignment about simulation tools to be made before the course (2.5 ECTS credits).
  2. Home assignment (preparation for seminar), lectures and seminars on cultural context of energy systems held by social anthropologists and political scientists. These colleagues study why people choose different energy systems. The course block is designed to make students think in a broader context. (1 ECTS credit).
  3. Simulation project as a home assignment (2.5 ECTS credits) where the student plans a study, makes a system model and performs a system study of a system of choice, often something relevant for the PhD (or masters) project. This project is often done using TRNSYS, but students have also used other simulation tools for their project.
The syllabus can be found at http://www.du.se/Templates/SyllabusPage____199.aspx?epslanguage=EN&kod=M%c3%963007, while the application form is attached as a PDF document with the relevant sections (course code etc) filled in. You have to fill in the form, attach the relevant documents and send them to the address given in the form.

Among the 60,000 visitors of this year’s Intersolar fair trade exhibition have been a number of ESES Alumni. On the picture from left to right Robert Händel (Innotec Solar, D/N), Joe Phillip (Sun Edison, USA) and Frank Fiedler (SERC, S) during the lunch break on the fair grounds. A number of ESES and SERC Alumni had a chance to meet during the evenings with Bavarian food and beer, Steffi Koepsel, Jörg Geisler, Laszlo Csanyi, Desirée Kroner, Csilla Gal, Baptiste Lacoste, Hannu Haapaniemi and Stefan Wagner. Steffi and Jörg had also their daughter Larissa with them. The solar community is growing! J
